The Pass is Open – Thursday, May 12, 2022 – and Planned Burning at Big Trees State Park

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will open State Route 4/Ebbetts Pass and Route 108/Sonora Pass at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2022, for the spring season.

Caltrans opened Route 89/Monitor Pass on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, from a storm
closure.

District 10’s goal always is to open the mountain passes the Friday prior to Memorial Day weekend. We thank our crews for their hard work to meet this goal.
Our top goal is safety for the traveling public. Even though the pass is open, motorists still should be prepared for emergencies, as weather and road conditions can change
rapidly.

For the latest information on road conditions throughout District 10, follow us on Twitter
(@CaltransDist10) or Facebook (CaltransDistrict10).

Before you hit the road, plan your trip with the Caltrans QuickMap app or website at
quickmap.dot.ca.gov. You can also call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).

In other news, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, in cooperation with CAL FIRE, plan to conduct prescribed burning at Calaveras Big Trees State Park starting Tuesday, May 10.  The planned treatments will cover approximately 250 acres in the North Grove area and along Highway 4.  If weather, air quality, or vegetation conditions are not conducive for burning or smoke dispersal, the department will reschedule the treatment.

Visitors should expect closures during the prescribed burning.  Closures may include the Grove Overlook Trail, a section of the North Grove Trails, a section of the River Canyon Trail, area fire roads, and the Walter W. Smith Memorial Parkway.
