U.S. Forest Service Implements Tier 1 Fire Restrictions in Alpine County
MARKLEEVILLE, Calif. — As fire danger continues to increase across the region, the U.S. Forest Service has implemented Tier 1 Fire Restrictions on National Forest lands within Alpine County. The restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and help protect local communities, visitors, and the county’s natural resources.
Under the current restrictions, several activities are prohibited or limited on National Forest lands, including:
  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using campfires except where specifically authorized.
  • Smoking outside of enclosed vehicles, buildings, or designated safe areas.
  • Welding or operating torches with an open flame.
  • Operating equipment or engaging in activities that may produce sparks or ignite dry vegetation.
  • Target shooting in fire-restricted areas.
Residents and visitors planning to recreate on National Forest lands are encouraged to review the complete list of restrictions before heading outdoors and to use extra caution while enjoying public lands. With vegetation drying rapidly, even a small spark has the potential to start a fast-moving wildfire.
The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office will be assisting the U.S. Forest Service with enforcement efforts throughout the county. Individuals who violate fire restrictions may be cited under Chapter 8 of the Alpine County Code, in addition to applicable federal regulations. Anyone whose actions result in a wildfire may also be held financially responsible for fire suppression costs and damages.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to do their part in preventing wildfires by following all fire restrictions, properly extinguishing any authorized fires, avoiding activities that may create sparks, and reporting any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 911.
